This red-orange to pink-orange variety of garnet was first discovered in the mid 1960's in the Umba River in Tanzania. First thought to be a Spessartite Garnet, they became known by the Swahili word Malaya (which translates to "outcast" because they do not fit into any traditional garnet categories) Malaya Garnet is a mixture of Pyrope, Almandite, and Spessartite. After cutting, Malaya Garnets will exhibit red scintillating flashes, the result of vandium and/or chromium that enliven their appearannce.
